Itinerary

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Meet your guide for a briefing on the climb, equipment check, and final preparations. Enjoy dinner and rest in anticipation of the trek.

Elevation: 2,250m to 2,820m Distance: 6 km Hiking Time: 3-4 hours Habitat: Rainforest A drive through the Lemosho Glades brings you to the start of the trek. A short hike through dense rainforest to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp.

Elevation: 2,820m to 3,610m Distance: 8 km Hiking Time: 5-6 hours Habitat: Moorland Today you leave the forest and enter the moorland zone. This relatively gentle hike brings you to Shira 1 Camp on the western edge of the Shira Plateau.

Elevation: 3,610m to 3,850m Distance: 7 km Hiking Time: 3-4 hours Habitat: Moorland You will hike across the plateau, where the views of Kibo Peak become more impressive. Shira 2 Camp is your destination for the night.

Elevation: 3,850m to 4,600m (Lava Tower), descend to 3,976m Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 7-8 hours Habitat: Semi-desert Ascend to the Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp. This descent helps your body adjust to the higher altitude.

Elevation: 3,976m to 3,995m Distance: 5 km Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Climb the Barranco Wall and continue to Karanga Camp. Enjoy a shorter, scenic day.

Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m Distance: 4 km Hiking Time: 3-4 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert A short, steep hike to Barafu Camp. Rest and prepare for your summit attempt.

Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (summit), descend to 3,100m Distance: 17 km (up and down) Hiking Time: 10-14 hours Begin your summit attempt around midnight, reaching the summit just after sunrise. After Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp.

Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m Distance: 10 km Hiking Time: 3-4 hours A leisurely descent through the rainforest brings you to Mweka Gate. Return to Moshi/Arusha.
